Satellite Receiver Shipments Surge in Q4 2002 Pushing Thomson to Number One
Motorola Hangs on to Top Spot for 2002 According to Acacia Research Group

Vancouver, WA - May 5, 2003 - Turbulence in both the cable and satellite industries causing wild fluctuations in shipments from all vendors coupled with seasonal demand for entertainment hardware drove Thomson into the number one spot for fourth quarter shipments of digital set top boxes according to Acacia Research Group's StatView Digital Set Top Box database. The company saw its shipments to the channel grow by nearly 37%, out shipping Motorola by approximately 200,000 units for the quarter.

"Thomson's position in the retail and reseller channels helped it push Motorola into the second spot," commented Christine Arrington, Senior Analyst, Acacia Research Group. "While neither retailers, resellers or network operators like to have excess inventory, retailers are much more likely to carry inventory in anticipation of a strong Holiday season. However the seasonal trend and continued conservative consumer sentiment will likely help Motorola regain their position in the coming quarters as satellite device shipments fall back in line with normal trends."

Year End 2002 Results
Despite a surge in shipments from satellite receiver vendors in the fourth quarter, Motorola finished the year in the number one position. While the company did report a 7.8% decline in shipments and slip in fourth quarter ranking to number two behind Thomson, Motorola maintained its position based on total year results.

2002 saw an emphasis on experimenting with new distribution models and finding new technologies to entice consumers into new revenue generating services. Motorola launched its retail model with two operators in the fourth quarter and nearly every vendor launched some sort of Digital Video Recorder device during the year. High Definition receivers also shared the spotlight this year as some of the political complications faded away and both cable and satellite operators began to embrace the transmission standard.
