Market for Digital Set Top Boxes Declines by 7% in 1H03
Motorola and Thomson/RCA in Close Competition for Number One According to Acacia Research Group

Vancouver, WA - October 25, 2003 - Intense marketing for multiple room systems in the U.S. satellite television market and burgeoning interest in DVR and HD boxes in both cable and satellite couldn't keep the digital set top box market from shrinking in the first half of 2003 according to Acacia Research Group's StatView Digital Set Top Box database. The market for set top devices declined by 7% from the first half of 2002 falling from 13.7 million units shipped to 12.7 million.

"Thomson/RCA and Motorola continue their fierce battle for the number one position in the set top box market. Thomson's growth of nearly 12% for the period put the company just over Motorola as shipments at the cable supplier fell nearly 24% in the first half." commented Christine Arrington, Senior Analyst, Acacia Research Group. "While the shipment numbers aren't all good news, vendors can look forward to a second half that will see many operators focus on marketing services such as DVR and HDTV. That could provide some much need business in higher margin boxes."
