Fourth Quarter Saves the Year at 21.4% Growth.
Vancouver, WA - April 30, 2004 - The worldwide digital set top box market grew by 6% in 2003, and 21.4% in the fourth quarter according to results from Acacia's StatView Digital Set Top Box Database. The satellite pay television industry continues to wield its influence in the market. In the fourth quarter set top box manufacturer Thomson grew by nearly 48% enabling the vendor to lock in first place in both the North American and Worldwide markets for both YE 2003 and Q403.
"Thomson was well placed to take advantage of the demand for multi-room satellite packages offered by U.S. marketers as well as the FreeView explosion in the U.K. market." commented Christine Arrington, Senior Analyst at Acacia Research Group.
Motorola's shipments fell by nearly 22% in 2003. Even so, the vendor held on to the second spot in the worldwide market. Scientific-Atlanta continued to see growth in demand for its advanced devices with DVR and HD capabilities.
