Game Middleware Set To Overtake ITV Middleware Spending By 2013
Acacia expects 14.2% five-year growth in game middleware spending
driven by innovative solutions for complexity in game development
Vancouver, WA - May 19, 2008 - pending on game middleware will surpass spending on ITV middleware by 2013, according to the latest market study on interactive entertainment middleware from Acacia Research Group. Game middleware will grow at an average of 14.2% annually over that period to $763.5 million with ITV middleware spending growing at 6.1% to $712.8 million.
“Third party game middleware vendors are providing innovation in areas ranging from multi-platform development to interface technology,” said Christine Arrington, Senior Analyst at Acacia Research Group. “This innovation continues to help developers lower costs, shrink development time and focus on game play rather than technology development.”
At the same time spending on in-house game development solutions will also increase as publishers and developers continue to search for ways to differentiate themselves from competitors through proprietary middleware technology. In-house solutions will continue to represent the biggest threat to third-party solutions providers in their bid to take advantage of this increased spending.
Despite losing dominance to the game middleware market ITV middleware spending will continue to grow as the pay television industry expands its reach. The market will be characterized by a battle for dominance in the IPTV segment over the next five years. As companies battle to be the de facto standard in the segment there will be a shake-out amongst those vying for a piece of that spending.
While mobile middleware spending is dwarfed by spending in ITV and game it will also increase dramatically, growing to $154.9 million by 2013. The market for mobile middleware is still very complex with solutions from handset technology vendors cutting into the market for third-party solutions. Increasing demand for 3D content on handsets will be key to opening the market for third-party mobile middleware solutions.
